How to Style a Utility Vest
I’ve been getting lots of questions lately about substituting the utility jacket in my Spring Capsule Wardrobe with a utility vest, particularly in warmer climates. So today I’ll talk about finding a utility vest and styling it a couple ways!

I will start off telling you that I don’t own a utility vest myself. I have not been able to find one that I LOVE and therefore, I am borrowing a friend’s utility vest that is slightly large on me.
For those who read my in-depth blog post on Tips for Choosing a Utility Jacket, those tips can be applied here for a vest style. I think the main item to consider with a vest is the length and the fit (loose or fitted). Also consider:
- Do you want this to look like a quilted vest you wear in fall/winter or spring-like with cotton/twill fabrics?
- What extras do you want on the vest? Pocket sizes, drawstrings, buttons, zippers, collars. They all play a role in how much you’ll love and therefore, wear this vest.
For styling a utility vest, I opted for 2 different styles here. In my opinion, both of these easily transition into fall weather so you’ll get more use out of them! The first look I call my casual outfit and my second look I call my running errands outfit.
Casual Outfit: Utility Vest
For this casual outfit, I opted for a go-to with my striped top. This is my favorite one from J. Crew (more info in this blog post on how it supports a charity organization) and pairs well with distressed denim. I styled this outfit when it was cooler outside with brown riding boots. These boots are waterproof and can be worn in spring with all the rain we get! I finished off the look with my reversible tote bag .
Style Tip: Substitute the longsleeve striped tee with a short sleeve v-neck tee for spring! My favorite one is from Madewell and fits me well in size XXS –shop it here.

Running Errands Outfit: Utility Vest
Who doesn’t love running errands in comfort (and style)?! This vest is a great layering option and brings more interest into the outfit. I love pairing navy with white so I put together a go-to longsleeve tee from FIGS with my white jeans. I finished off the look with my new go-to slip-on sneakers that I am wearing ALL the time for errands! You’ve probably seen them in my Instagram stories on weekends as I run out the door for the day!
