Ever wonder how to clean your makeup brushes? Here I explain why and HOW to clean your makeup brushes using Bobbi Brown Brush Cleanser. Update: New Video Added!
Being a healthcare professional, it’s kind of crazy how much we overlook this simple cleaning step in our weekly routines. We may be getting our weekly/monthly facials and using expensive face creams but then we forget to clean our makeup brushes? The amount of bacteria, dead skin and dirt that accumulates on these makeup brushes is incredible.
Here are my SIMPLE Tips for Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes
Bobbi Brown Brush Cleanser
- How often? Every 1-2 weeks (I set a reminder on my iPhone to update me every 2 weeks in case I forget)
- When? Wash in the morning with this cleanser right after makeup application. This gives the brushes ~24 hours to air-dry
- Steps involved? Place pea size amount of cleanser in left hand, take brush and wet it in warm water, lather brush hairs in cleanser and swirl in the palm of your hand, rinse off thoroughly until all cleanser residue is gone, gently squeeze dry and repeat on next brush. I also wear a latex glove on my left hand to prevent product color buildup on my skin while cleaning the brush hairs.
- Air-dry? Can you explain? I spread out my brushes on a paper towel and let the brush hairs hang over the counter-top (see photo) to dry
- Does this hurt the brush hairs? No, it’s good to keep everything clean and quality makeup brushes are built for routine cleaning routines
- Anything else to know? After a cleaning, the makeup brush may shed a few hairs during the next makeup application. That is normal and nothing to be worried about unless it is significant shedding.
- What if I can’t wait for a long dry-time? The Bobbi Brown Brush Cleaning Spray is great alternative between full-shampoo washes. Simply spray it on a tissue, sweep the brush hairs back and forth in the tissue until clean. Then allow a quick dry before using again.
- Don’t forget…clean your eyelash curler too. I use a tissue to wipe it clean and then replace my eyelash curler pad every 6 months (Shiseido buy here)
I absolutely LOVE my Bobbi Brown Makeup Brushes. I have had my set for ~8-10 years and just recently added a few brushes to my set—the Bobbi Brown Full-Coverage Face for liquid foundation (switching out my Bobbi Brown Foundation Brush for now) and Angled Face Brush for highlighting. I also discussed this Bobbi Brown brush set in the Nordstrom Anniversary sale post.
