How to Style a Modern Utility Jacket Three Ways // Work, Casual, Date Night
I’ve been on the hunt for an olive green utility jacket this year and while I was looking, I came across this cool green jacket! I call it a modern version of a utility jacket and I’m in LOVE! For those who know me, some would say I have a slight obsession with jackets/coats/blazers. I call it… finding completer pieces I love…. that I can’t live without…. because of their versatility! That’s why I’m showing you how to style this modern utility jacket three ways today – work, casual, date night – and giving you similar jacket options for those looking to add one to their own wardrobe! Plus, a few details on a regular olive green utility jacket that fits well at the end of this post.

Before we get into styling, let me first address a question you’re going to have…sizing. I purchased this jacket in a 00 Petite and thought it fit very well. But my mom pointed out that it looked a little tight from the back so I headed into my local store to try on a 0 Petite and a 00 Regular for size comparisons. The 00 Regular fit a little wider in the shoulders, had a longer hem but the arm length was ~2 inches longer and required me to cuff up the sleeves to wear. The 0 Petite fit well in the shoulders, sleeves were still the correct length, gave me a little more room to move around in (think stretching shoulders forward and back to feel the fit) and was the perfect size for me. Overall, I sized up to a 0 Petite from my usual 00 Petite.
Modern Utility Jacket: Date Night Outfit
This might be one of my all-time favorite outfits! Because of the gorgeous color of this jacket, I wanted to accent it with a neutral top and classic jewelry. I chose my twist-front tee in Oatmeal for this purpose and paired it with a classic pearl statement necklace. A pair of distressed jeans go well with this modern utility jacket. Finally, a pair of heels in a subtle mint green color finish off the look and elevate it to date night chic.
Style Tip: If you want to wear this outfit during the day, simply change out your shoes for slip-on sneakers (favorite pair here) or flats (new favorite pair here with more options in video caption) and you’ll be running errands in style!

Modern Utility Jacket: Work Outfit
Of course, I wear this jacket to work too! I treat it as a blazer and pair it with my go-to work pants that I own in several colors. For these pants, I opted for a blue color with my modern utility jacket because I think it pulls out the cool green color hues from it well. I decided on a classic button up white blouse to wear underneath as a layer and pulled the collar over the jacket collar. Again, a classic pearl necklace accents this outfit and perfectly ties into the gold buttons on the jacket. A navy belt and navy bow pumps complete the look without drawing attention away from this jacket.

Modern Utility Jacket: Casual Outfit
A more laid back outfit for casual wear. I like these neutral ivory pants that I borrowed from my mom. They are similar to a chino style and will work well for a putting together a polished casual outfit (unfortunately, they were a little big on me though). A classic brown belt pairs well with this jacket and I opted to keep the same blouse as my work outfit here. You can also swap it out for a V-neck tee for a more casual look. To finish off the look, my favorite ankle booties work well and tie into the neutral hues from the accessories.
Style Tip: Swap out ankle booties for block heeled sandals (love these) to transition this outfit from fall/winter to spring/summer.

Bonus, I finally did find an olive green utility jacket that fits me well. I’ll dedicate a separate blog post to showing you how to style it but for now, let me tell you where it’s from in case it sells out – J. Crew Factory and I’m wearing size XX-Small. The sleeves are great because I can either cuff them up, wear them down with one snap closure or wear them down with the second snap closure (tighter fit around wrists). The drawstring waist is completely customizable and I like it cinched tight. Plus, it also has 4 functioning pockets!
